Talking To Your Teen

WHY TALKING TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT SEX IS IMPORTANT

When a local ninth-grade girl was asked why it is important for parents to talk to their teens about sex, she replied, “If parents want to help their children have a better future, then they should talk to them. We make our own decisions when we’re with our friends, but our parents talking to us might make us think twice.”

Many parents get nervous even thinking about having the “sex talk” with their children. Some feel as if they don’t need to bring this topic up because their parents didn’t talk to them about sex, and they turned out just fine. Unfortunately, society is a lot different than it was in the past, and the battle begins younger and younger.

Think about your children as sponges. When they are young they are naturally curious about sex, and they will try to soak up as much information as they can get about it. They will go anywhere to find the information–television, music, peers, books, or the Internet.

This is why it’s incredibly important to talk to your kids. You need to fill up that sponge before it’s already saturated. You need to soak it with the correct information.

Even though it might not seem this way, your children are listening, and they want information from you.
